Enormous advances in care of the child with critical heart disease have marked the last decade. These have ranged from refinements in the staged management of the child with a univentricular heart to the explosion in diagnostic imaging capabilities to the understanding of the factors governing neurologic outcomes. The extreme rarity of intraoperative death has only heightened the focus on the peri-operative period for these children.
Within this changing environment, the objectives of this second edition of Critical Heart Disease in Infants and Children remain the same. Our goal is to offer a comprehensive understanding of critical heart disease based on scientific principles and best evidence combined with practical management plans. The care of these children is a multidisciplinary effort; therefore, the authors reflect the various disciplines that collaborate in the care of children with life-threatening heart disease.
