Cardiac Surgery. 4th ed

All chapters have undergone major scrutiny. Many new materials have been introduced. These include the surgical ventricular reconstruction for both left and right ventricular dysfunction, the management of porcelain aorta, and antegrade cerebral perfusion. The section on congenital heart defects introduces new procedures for pulmonary vein stenosis, updated approaches for Tetralogy of Fallot, the aortic translocation operation, and the Sano procedure. Several parts of the book have been completely rewritten, incorporating recent concepts and approaches into the text. Obsolete procedures have been deleted.
The book continues to be primarily intended for younger surgeons and those in training. However, it can also serve as a handy refresher on surgical technique for senior cardiac surgeons. Pediatric and adult cardiologists as well as perfusionists, nurses, and anyone involved in the care of cardiac surgical patients should find this work useful.

Device Therapy in Heart Failure

Device Therapy in Heart FailureHeart failure affects over 5 million patients in the United States alone, and is a chronic and debilitating disease. While a number of pharmacologic therapies have shown varying degrees of effectiveness, many recent advances in the treatment of heart failure has focused on device based therapies. In Device Therapy in Heart Failure, William H. Maisel and a panel of authorities on the use and implementation of device based therapies provide a comprehensive overview of the current and developing technologies that are used to treat heart failure. Individual chapters provide an in-depth analysis of devices such as CRT’s and ICD’s, while broader topics such as the pathophysiology of heart failure and its current medical therapies are also discussed. Additional topics include Pacing and Defibrillation for Atrial Arrhythmias, Atrial Fibrillation Ablation, and Percutaneous Treatment of Coronary Artery Disease.

Aortic Root Surgery. The Biological Solution

The surgical treatment of the aortic valve and root disease, organic and ischemic mitral regurgitation, and endocarditis has made great strides. Still, there is the well-known dilemma: on the one hand the need for anticoagulation in patients with mechanical valves that otherwise guarantee long-term functioning and, on the other, the unpredictable durability of biological substitutes and of valve repair procedures which, per se, do not require anticoagulation. The choice of procedure is determined by factors such as patients' age, metabolic and bleeding disorders, and bleeding preconditions, as well as such critical issues as the desire to bear children in young women. In this book internationally renowned experts focus on current surgical approaches to and evolving trends in aortic valve repair, aortic root and valve replacement with pulmonary autograft, aortic allograft, stentless and stented bioprostheses. Further contributions deal with recent advances in catheter-based percutaneous and transapical techniques, ablation techniques for atrial fibrillation, tissue engineering of heart valves, multi-modality imaging, and anticoagulation.

Sabiston & Spencer Surgery of the Chest. 7th Ed.

Sabiston & Spencer Surgery of the Chest. 7th Ed.When first asked to be editor of the 7th Edition of Sabiston and Spencer Surgery of the Chest, I considered it a great honor and privilege, since this textbook is widely regarded as one of the premier resources in cardiothoracic surgery. Drs. David Sabiston and Frank Spencer have been regarded as leaders in the field of surgery for nearly the past half century. When asking some of my esteemed colleagues if they would be willing to contribute a chapter to this new edition, they almost universally said yes, but in a few cases their initial reply was, “In these days of electronic publishing and web based information gathering, why do we need another printed textbook?” While much information can be obtained from the web, including the contents of most peer- reviewed journals, I believe that the most efficient, authoritative method to obtain clinical information remains reading the textbook.

Congenital Heart Disease

Congenital Heart DiseaseThe objective of this book is to evaluate the natural history of congenital heart lesions as a background to finding out if and to what extent treatment has improved outcomes. To do this, the early literature has been searched for information about what happened to these patients in the days before surgical treatment became available. This information can then be compared with the outcomes of surgical and, more recently, interventional catheterbased treatment, and different forms of treatment can be compared with each other. A lot of data about natural history are contained in individual case reports, and sometimes assembling all these reports gives a picture that belies conventional wisdom about the effects of the lesion. While gathering data for this book, I have realized that many statements in current texts about the natural history of a particular lesion are either incorrect or at least biased towards a subset of the lesion.

Critical Heart Disease In Infants And Children. 2nd Ed.

Critical Heart Disease In Infants And Children. 2nd Ed.Enormous advances in care of the child with critical heart disease have marked the last decade. These have ranged from refinements in the staged management of the child with a univentricular heart to the explosion in diagnostic imaging capabilities to the understanding of the factors governing neurologic outcomes. The extreme rarity of intraoperative death has only heightened the focus on the peri-operative period for these children.

Within this changing environment, the objectives of this second edition of Critical Heart Disease in Infants and Children remain the same. Our goal is to offer a comprehensive understanding of critical heart disease based on scientific principles and best evidence combined with practical management plans. The care of these children is a multidisciplinary effort; therefore, the authors reflect the various disciplines that collaborate in the care of children with life-threatening heart disease.
