When first asked to be editor of the 7th Edition of Sabiston and Spencer Surgery of the Chest, I considered it a great honor and privilege, since this textbook is widely regarded as one of the premier resources in cardiothoracic surgery. Drs. David Sabiston and Frank Spencer have been regarded as leaders in the field of surgery for nearly the past half century. When asking some of my esteemed colleagues if they would be willing to contribute a chapter to this new edition, they almost universally said yes, but in a few cases their initial reply was, “In these days of electronic publishing and web based information gathering, why do we need another printed textbook?” While much information can be obtained from the web, including the contents of most peer- reviewed journals, I believe that the most efficient, authoritative method to obtain clinical information remains reading the textbook.
